chapter 2-2

Foundations:
The Essentials of Our Faith

Based on Hebrews 6.1-3, this Bible study explores and explains the topics described by the Biblical author as “elementary” and “foundational.” These topics are just as fundamental to our faith today as they were in the first century.

Faith In God (continued) – the Holy Spirit

So having established our basis for faith in God, and extended it via the command of our Savior to include the Son, we now look to the third component of our trinity, the Holy Spirit.

As you read, take note that Jesus is describing a spiritual indwelling, which is delivered at the beginning of our shared church history in the book of Acts.

Pentecost

We call this event Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended and indwelled the gathered congregation in the Upper Room, and it is this Holy Spirit that comprises the third “identity” of our Trinity.

When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.
Acts 2.1-4

Once Peter was filled with the Spirit, he began preaching in tongues, and over 3000 were saved, baptized and in-turn, filled with the Spirit themselves.

Even today, the Holy Spirit offends people with its power and expression, but the Holy Spirit is moving in strong ways in our world.

More On Faith

Just to ensure we’re tracking, lets define faith.
